What is this company
JH GeoConsulting AB (JH Geo) is an independent, private owned consulting company with an annual turnover of almost 400,000 Euro. Prof. Jan Hartlén is owner of the company. The company is engaged in complicated infrastructure projects providing expertise to clients, consultants and contractors.

The company and its owner are well established in Sweden and also known in other countries. This is due to the fact that Prof. Hartlén was former Director General of the Swedish Geotechnical Institute for 16 years. The company is also closely related to the research at Lund University of Technology, where Prof. Hartlén is leading a research group related to environmental geotechnology.

The number of employed is two persons and also having part time employed persons. In the Geotechnet project, Dr David Bendz, is especially engaged.

What does the company
JH Geo’s consulting activities are situated in the field of foundation engineering, environmental impact assessment (EIA), groundwater management and tunnelling, recycling of industrial residues and. building debris, as well as handling of contaminated soil. Another important task of the company is to review the design of large infrastructure projects.  Examples of major clients are Banverket (Swedish Rail Administration), Vägverket (National Swedish Road Administration), Citytunnelkonsortiet in Malmö, SYSAV (regional waste management company) and Malmö City.

Why is this company in the network
The company is involved in several of the largest infrastructure projects in Sweden. The experience in the environmental field is based on e.g. involvement in dredging at the Öresund bridge between Sweden and Denmark, solving the crisis of the tunnel construction in Hallandsĺs after contamination of the groundwater by chemical grout, the experience in evaluating chemical products for use in earthworks, especially as grout in soil and rock and related items. The knowledge is now used in the design of a new tunnel underneath the city of Malmö.

This gained experience from practice and research is well suited for the work package No 5 of Geotechnet “Practice document for geotechnical working methods vs. Environmental impact with special reference to the Water Directive.

The company has very good contacts to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency who has promised to give support in the proposed Geotechnet project.

Prof. Hartlén is leader of workpackage 5. The growing importance of the protection of the environment, Geotechnet shall realise a practice document for geotechnical working methods with specific reference to the Water Directive. Further, prof Hartlén will is also a member of the Steering Committee.
