WP 3 – Design Tools: FEM & OM

General objective:

Stimulating and accelerating the proper use of innovative and more cost-effective design methods

The key innovative design methods that will be considered in WP 3 are Finite Element Methods (FEM) and Observational Methods Processes (OM).  Know-how related to these methods will be gathered and disseminated (soil models, soil input parameters, importance of the modelling factors for proper use of FEM, …).  This will, among others, be supported by consultable databases addressing numerical programs & FEM, and measurement techniques (subject to WP 1).

Furthermore, there will be focussed on the use of FEM & OM according to the semi-probalistic safety approach of Eurocode 7 (characteristic values, design values, partial safety factors, …).

Herewith it is aimed to improve the confidence in geotechnical design, to reduce the risk on accidents related to geotechnical constructions, and to stimulate the application of these innovative methods.

Deliverable:

Report on FEM & OM use in geotechnical design
